Professor Sam Janes
Medical interests: Assessment of patients with chest complaints and abnormal chest X-rays. Lung cancer, endobronchial ultrasound, medical research.
I am a great believer in the role of research and innovation in medicine. I am actively engaged in projects that seek to improve how lung cancers are diagnosed and staged, as well as how they are treated, so that we can help patients regain their quality of life as fast as possible. I developed the endobronchial ultrasound service at UCLH for use primarily in detecting lung cancer, and I can see a future in which we will be able to use stem cells as vectors in gene therapy for lung cancers.
Professor Sam Janes trained in Respiratory Medicine in London at St Mary’s Hospital, the Hammersmith Hospital and the Harefield Heart Hospital. He combined his clinical training with medical research, gaining an MSc degree with distinction for work done at The Royal Brompton Hospital. He went on to win a training fellowship with the Medical Research Council and completed a PhD degree on how cancer cells can survive more easily when they express specific adhesion proteins. Professor Janes was awarded the Investigator of the Year prize by the European Respiratory Society in 2010.
Professor Janes is a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he also offers acute care and treats patients with lung cancer. He is the lead clinician for lung cancer across North Central and North East London and is an expert bronchoscopist. He is active in research and is lead investigator on several lung trials. He has published the majority of the work performed in the UK on Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS). He is also building the European Respiratory Society Education work plan and chairs the British Thoracic Society Meeting Committee. He was appointed Professor of Respiratory Medicine at UCL in August 2013.
