As a Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist, I use tests of nerve and muscle function to help in the investigation and diagnosis of patients who have symptoms of nerve entrapment, nerve injury or generalised nerve or muscle disease. I use specialised equipment, a Nerve Conduction & Electromyography machine, to test the affected nerves or muscles with the examination tailored to the patient’s clinical symptoms. Expertise I have a very wide range of experience in the investigation of simple to complex peripheral nerve or muscle disorders, these include single nerve compression syndromes (such as carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve entrapments), the investigation of nerve injuries after inflammation or trauma, the investigation of degenerative nerve disease (neuropathies) or muscle diseases (myopathies), I also have a special clinical interest in the investigation of myasthenia gravis.

I trained at Cambridge University and qualified in 1992 at Addenbrooke’s Medical School. After a broad clinical background in adult and paediatric medicine I studied for a PhD at University College London where I researched aspects of the neurophysiology of neonatal brain function. I then completed my clinical training in Clinical Neurophysiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Great Ormond Street Hospital and in 2005 I was appointed to my first consultant post at Addenbrooke’s Hospital where I led and managed the regional Clinical Neurophysiology Service for Cambridge.

I have been a Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist since 2005, starting my consultant career at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge before moving to my current post at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust in 2008, where I am the current clinical lead of a department that deals with over 6000 investigations per year. In addition to my clinical work, I have roles as an educational supervisor for junior doctors specialising in Clinical Neurophysiology and for as a supervisor for medical students undertaking research as part of their degree. I am a member of the British Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and I teach on international courses for the use of specialist EMG techniques used in Paediatric Neurophysiology (many of which apply to adult disease).
