As Clinical Director at UCLH, I oversee the management of patients with a range of endocrinology disorders. My special interests include type 1 and type 2 diabetes, diseases that originate from problems in the thyroid gland or the parathyroid glands, and in calcium disorders. These can result from disorders of the endocrine glands but have wide-ranging effects on many organs and tissues of the body, including the bones.

Dr Steven Hurel trained as a doctor at the medical school at Southampton University. He completed his clinical pre-registration training at Northwick Park in London and then worked as a Medical Registrar in Tyne-and-Wear, treating patients in NHS hospitals in Newcastle and Middlesbrough. After developing a strong interest in endocrinology, he completed research investigating the role of insulin signalling in muscles and was awarded a PhD degree in 1996. After further endocrinology training he was appointed as Consultant Endocrinologist at the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust (UCLH), and has remained there since.

Dr Hurel is currently Divisional Clinical Director for Medical Specialities and Outpatient Departments at UCLH. His clinical practice focuses on patients with diabetes, thyroid disease and other endocrinology conditions and he is also active in clinical and fundamental research in these areas. His major research interests at the moment include the development of non-invasive methods of monitoring endocrine disorders as well as the relationship between diabetes and the risk of heart disease.
