Professor Neal Navani
Medical interests: Common respiratory conditions: asthma, chronic cough, lung disease related to smoking. Smoking cessation. Bronchoscopy, EBUS. Diagnosis and management of sarcoidosis, chronic and acute bronchitis, TB, other lung infections, COPD and lung cancer. Pulmonary rehabilitation.
I have a patient-centred approach to all aspects of my work, whether with NHS or private patients. I feel it is important to given people time to explain their symptoms, how they feel and the problems they are having. Breathing problems are distressing and the emotional impact that they have cannot be overestimated. Careful listening, clinical examination and the most up-to-date diagnostic tests and technology are all needed in the path towards an accurate diagnosis. Different patients then need an individual treatment plan, based on their diagnosis and their lifestyle and other factors. Ongoing care should then involve support as well as drug treatments or other interventions for the most successful outcome. Expertise I am a Respiratory Physician and deal with a wide range of problems related to the lungs and to breathing. I have a particular interest in lung cancer screening and in using new technology to investigate lung conditions. Symptoms investigated

Professor Neal Navani attended the University of Cambridge for his pre-clinical undergraduate medical training, going on to University College London (UCL) for his early clinical training. After gaining an MBBS with distinction at UCL, he was accepted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians. From 2003 he then worked across the capital, specialising in respiratory medicine. He held posts at the Royal Free, Hammersmith Hospital and the Brompton. Further research followed and Professor Navani holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical Trial Methodology and a PhD, both from UCL. His research focus continues to be the clinical value of using endobronchial ultrasound, particularly in the diagnosis of early lung cancers. In the last few years, Professor Navani has been one of the driving forces behind the development of a tertiary service for endobronchial ultrasound at University College London Hospital.
Professor Navani has been a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at UCLH since 2007. He is a member of several learned societies, including the International Association for the Study of Lung cancer and the British Thoracic Oncology Group.
