Dr Mike Brown
Medical interests: Acute medicine; infectious diseases; tropical medicine. Pulmonary tuberculosis. Fever of unknown origin. Clinical microbiology. Diagnosis and management of imported parasitic infections.
I practice as an acute care physician and as a specialist in infectious and tropical diseases, which means I see patients with a wide range of acute and chronic infectious diseases. I have broad experience of treating infection of all kinds, including hospital-acquired infections and a particular interest in the health of people who have lived in, or travelled to, countries where more unusual infections are a major problem. My expertise enables me to treat patients with various acute and chronic infections acquired in the UK, but also migrants settled in the UK and international patients who need specialist diagnosis and treatment.
Dr Mike Brown gained his medical degree at Oxford University, completing his clinical training at University College Hospital and other London teaching hospitals. After being awarded a Wellcome Trust Fellowship, he worked at the UK MRC Programme on HIV in Uganda for two years. This culminated in his PhD thesis, awarded by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, which explored the impact of coinfection with helminths on HIV disease.
Dr Brown has been a consultant physician at University College London Hospital since 2007 and specialises in Infectious Diseases, Tropical Medicine and Acute Medicine. He is Clinical Lead of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases and is a senior lecturer at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. In addition to his clinical work, Dr Brown runs an active research group working on parasitic infections, pulmonary tuberculosis, HIV and migrant health.
