Dr Marc George
General and Acute Medicine, Hypertension, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
General Medicine
I manage patients with a broad range of acute and general medical problems with particular expertise in diagnostic uncertainty and patients with multiple comorbidities and polypharmacy (being on several medications). As a Clinical Pharmacologist I review medicines together with the patient to weigh their intended benefits against potential adverse effects and explore the range of therapeutic options.
Hypertension, Cholesterol and Cardiovascular risk
I am the clinical lead for the Hypertension and Cardiovascular Risk clinic at University College London Hospital and have extensive experience investigating and managing patients with complex hypertension including young-onset, post-partum, post-stroke and heart attack, resistant (not responding to medicines), perioperative and secondary hypertension (due to underlying medical causes). I often help patients who suffer with adverse reactions to their blood pressure medicines and address other cardiovascular risk factors including high cholesterol.
Dr George studied Medicine at the University of Leeds graduating in 2007 with honours and a 1st class intercalated BSc degree. He subsequently trained in London and was awarded a prestigious Welcome Trust Clinical Research fellowship to undertake a PhD in cardiovascular pharmacology at University College London. This research was awarded several regional and national prizes. He completed his specialist training in General (Internal) Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics in 2020.
Dr George’s NHS appointment at University College London Hospital includes General and Acute Medicine and he is clinical lead for the Hypertension and Cardiovascular Risk service. He leads the development of medical emergency guidelines for the trust and sits on the ‘use of medicines’ committee which evaluates new medicines. He is an honorary associate professor at the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and is actively involved in clinical research and teaching for the institute and UCL medical school.
