Dr Ed Seward

Gastroenterology

Medical interests: Bowel Cancer diagnosis, inflammatory bowel disease, therapeutic endoscopy.

I worked for many years as a general gastroenterologist alongside general medicine, and this has given me the benefit of a very broad experience that hugely benefits my diagnostic and therapeutic work. This also allows a holistic approach to my patients, where the individual and not just the diagnosis is treated. In my current post at University College London Hospital I specialise in colonoscopy and bowel cancer diagnosis, as well as inflammatory bowel disease. As such, I provide a tertiary referral service to complex colonoscopy work, with a particular emphasis on inherited cancer syndromes. I also lead the bowel scope service for North Central London that aims to provide a service that diagnoses large bowel polyps at an early stage, to avoid bowel cancer in later life.

Ed Seward trained in Edinburgh for six years before moving to Liverpool where he developed an interest in Gastroenterology. He then worked as a Specialist Registrar across North East London, before obtaining a consultant post at Whipps Cross Hospital – now part of Barts Health NHS Trust. Situated in the diverse area of Waltham Forest, this enabled him to develop a broad experience in Gastroenterology. As Endoscopy Lead he developed a sub-specialist interest in therapeutic Endoscopy with particular expertise in colonoscopy, large polyp removal and colonic stenting. It also allowed him to pursue a passion for service improvement and redesign, which culminated in his appointment as a National Clinical Advisor for Endoscopy. More recently, he has been responsible for piloting a pathway to shorten diagnostic waits in colorectal cancer which was shortlisted for a prestigious BMJ award, and is currently planned to be extended nationally via Cancer Research UK’s ‘ACE’ program. He has worked as a national clinical lead in endoscopy, and an expert advisor for CRUK, and provides expert gastroenterology advice for the NHS Ombudsman. Ed was appointed to UCLH in 2014 to deliver ‘Bowel Scope’ for the North central area of London – the national plan to provide screening for bowel cancer and polyps to all 55 year olds. He also delivers a tertiary referral interventional colonoscopy service, and is also involved with colonoscopy teaching and expanding the research brief at UCLH.
