Cardiology

Medical interests: Angina, fainting, palpitations and ventricular ectopics, heart failure, inherited cardiac disease, sports cardiology, heart disease in pregnancy.

In my general cardiology practice I manage patients with chest pain, hypertension, palpitations and faints, and I offer specialist services for patients with heart failure, pregnancy and heart disease, and inherited heart problems. I have several years’ experience in evaluating sports people and I perform pre-participation screening for sports events. As a cardiologist accredited for cardiac sports screening by the Football Association, I am in high demand by professional players. Currently I provide cardiac services to several professional football teams including Spurs, West Ham, Stoke City, Watford and Fulham. I am also qualified to see adolescents and can see patients from 13 years old and upwards.

Dr Varnava completed her medical degree at Oxford University Medical School, graduating in 1990, and then went to St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London for her clinical training. She specialised in cardiology at the Royal Brompton Hospital, St George’s Hospital, St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The London Chest Hospital. As part of her training she dedicated several years’ research to expanding our understanding of the genetic causes of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that runs in families. Expertise I have expertise and many years’ experience in all aspects of cardiology including the assessment of faints, palpitations and chest pains. My specialist expertise is in inherited cardiac conditions, and cardiac problems in athletes. Symptoms investigated

Dr Varnava was appointed Head of Cardiology Department for Imperial College NHS Trust, July 2020, with responsibility for running the cardiac services across Hammersmith, St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals, London. In her NHS cardiology practice, Dr Varnava sees thousands of patients each year with heart conditions that include angina and ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, fainting and troublesome palpitations. She has particular expertise in the genetic factors that increase the risk of sudden cardiac events in active young people and leads two specialist clinics within the NHS: The Inherited Cardiac Disease Centre at St Mary’s Hospital, for the Imperial College Healthcare Trust, which offers a regional specialist service to adults and their families. The Pregnancy and Heart Disease Service at Watford General Hospital, for the West Hertfordshire Hospital Trust, which looks after pregnant women with pre-existing heart disease or who develop a heart problem during pregnancy. Dr Varnava also offers CT coronary angiography and other techniques to assess cardiovascular risk and provides treatment programmes aimed at managing high blood pressure (hypertension) and reducing heart attack risk. Dr Varnava is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and plays an active role in Heart Rhythm UK and the British Cardiovascular Society.
