Dr Louise Bowles
Professional Interests: My expertise is in thrombosis and haemostasis which refers to disorders of blood clotting causing either bleeding or abnormal blood clots, for example pulmonary embolus and deep vein thrombosis.
As a haematologist with specialist interest in disorders of blood clotting, I can offer expertise to those who have had thrombosis (abnormal blood clots) or abnormal bleeding. I have expertise in the laboratory investigation of these conditions as well as their treatment options. I have developed a particular interest in how disorders of blood clotting can affect women’s health, for example causing heavy menstrual bleeding. Expertise I have expertise in the investigation and management of disorders of blood clotting, both thrombosis and bleeding. Disorders of thrombosis include deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. I am able to arrange investigations to consider the cause of the thrombosis and provide advice and guidance on different options for anticoagulation (blood thinning). For those who have symptoms of excessive bleeding, for example easy bruising or bleeding after surgery, I will arrange a comprehensive set of investigations and provide expert interpretation of specialist tests. I have developed a particular interest in how disorders of blood clotting can affect women’s health, for example causing heavy menstrual bleeding.
Dr Bowles graduated from University of London Medical School. After completing medical rotations in London, she did her specialist training in haematology at University College Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. Dr Bowles has been a consultant in thrombosis and haemostasis at the Royal London Hospital since 2008. She has written a number of local and national guidelines in the areas of thrombosis and haemostasis. In her NHS practice, Dr Bowles runs regular clinics in bleeding and thrombosis as well as joint clinics with colleagues in women’s health. She holds leadership roles for the trust. Dr Bowles has an active role in teaching and is an examiner for The Royal College of Pathologists.
