Professor Stuart Bloom

Medical interests: Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional gut disorders, Food intolerance, Dyspepsia, general gastroenterology.

Professor Bloom works at University College London Hospitals, where he set up the inflammatory bowel disease clinic. This remains a major interest together with irritable bowel, bowel cancer screening, and general gastroenterology. He consults at the Physicians clinic on a Wednesday but is available for phone consultations where necessary. Expertise He is an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist and has carried out approximately 10,000 colonoscopies with a complication rate of under 0.5%. He leads a team at UCLH looking after over 3000 patients with inflammatory bowel disease. He has over 1000 patients on biologic therapy or immunomodulators. Research Interests include clinical trials in inflammatory bowel disease and the role of Innate immunity in the pathogenesis of Intestinal Inflammation.  

Stuart Bloom graduated in Medicine in 1984 after training at Oxford and St Thomas Hospital. He worked as a junior Doctor in London, Oxford and Liverpool and did his doctorate on adhesion molecules in inflammatory bowel disease at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford. He was appointed consultant gastroenterologist at University College London Hospitals in 1996. He was chair of the IBD section of the British Society of Gastroenterology from 2006-2009 and was National Specialty Lead for Gastroenterology at the NIHR Comprehensive Clinical Research Network (NIHR-CCRN) from 2008-2013. He is currently chair of the UK IBD registry.
