As a neurogastroenterologist, I specialise in diseases of the gut that affect its nervous system, muscles and connective tissue. I also specialise in gut symptoms that occur due to abnormal communication between the brain and the gut such as in stress. The patients I see most commonly are those with complex unexplained gastrointestinal disorders. I work in a multidisciplinary way with pain specialists, dieticians and psychologists. I have access to sophisticated diagnostic techniques to investigate gut function and use these to guide treatment.

Professor Aziz started his research career at the University of Manchester and obtained his PhD in 1996. He held posts of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Manchester, and is now Professor of Neurogastroenterology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary, University of London since 2006 and is the director of the world renowned Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology. Professor Aziz has obtained national and international awards for his research the two most important being the British Society of Gastroenterology Research Gold Medal and the American Gastroenterology Association, Janssen Award for Basic and Clinical Research. He has published numerous original articles in reputed medical journals such as Nature Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, Lancet and Gastroenterology. He has made many pioneering discoveries, most recently he demonstrated an association between the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which is a non inflammatory connective tissue disorders and gastrointestinal symptoms in functional gastrointestinal disorders. He has held the positions of chairman of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology, executive committee member of European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, Education Committee member of United European Gastroenterology Federation and was co-lead for the 2013 Global Campaign against Visceral Pain launched by the International Association for the Study of Pain and is currently co-lead for developing the World Health Organisation ICD-11 classification codes for visceral pain. He is a member of the ROME IV committee for the classification and guideline development for functional gastrointestinal disorders. Professor Aziz’s clinical interests are in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders e.g. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Dyspepsia etc; abdominal pain; gastrointestinal motility disorders and gastrointestinal manifestations of systemic disease e.g. diabetes, neurological disorders and connective tissue disorders like scleroderma and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
