Neurological symptoms can be a major source of stress and worry. I believe that spending extra time exploring patients’ symptoms and offering them rapid access to investigations enables earlier diagnoses and carefully targeted treatment. Patients can be safe in the knowledge that concerns will be dealt with in an understanding and professional manner. I see patients with a range of neurological problems including headaches, blackouts, dizziness, numbness, tremor and unexplained symptoms. In addition, I offer a specialist epilepsy service offering advice on all aspects of seizure diagnosis and management. Patients range from suspected or newly diagnosed epilepsy through to complex and difficult to control epilepsy. I also offer specific management for patients with dissociative or functional seizures. I am a strong advocate of a holistic approach to epilepsy focusing as much on associated problems such as memory difficulties, mood disorders (e.g. depression and anxiety), and social concerns, as on improving seizure control with the least possible side effects. Expertise I have expertise in managing a range of common and rarer neurological conditions. Neurological consultations will centre around a detailed enquiry into the current neurological symptoms as well as any relevant medical background history. Information obtained from the history will direct the examination which may concentrate on the nervous system but may involve examination of other systems if required. For some conditions e.g. seizures or memory problems, bringing along someone such as a family member or friend who may be able to provide additional information can be very helpful in reaching the correct diagnosis. Dr Rebecca Liu is a Consultant Neurologist with particular expertise in the management of epilepsy disorders and dissociative seizures. She obtained her medical qualification from Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital in 1994 and was awarded a first-class BSc degree in psychology from University College London in 1991. She conducted her postgraduate medical training at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square and the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead and went on to develop her epilepsy skills at renowned units including the Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy and NHNN. She was awarded a PhD for her research into the impact of epilepsy on the human brain in 2004. She has received local and international awards including the Sir Charles Symonds Prize from the Association of British Neurologists and the prestigious Young Investigator’s Award at the American Epilepsy Society for her work. She has published her findings in a number of internationally renowned peer review journals. She has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London since 2013.

Dr Liu is a Consultant Neurologist at The Royal Free Hospital London, UK where she runs general neurology clinics and a specialist epilepsy service. She is also part of the acute neurology service. She is the Trust lead for functional neurological disorders and has established a new clinical service for patients with dissociative seizures. As Trust Educational Lead for Neurosciences at the Royal Free Hospital, she is passionate and committed to improving the quality of postgraduate education and training in secondary care. She also has experience in developing integrated care services for patients with epilepsy in the community as well as transitional epilepsy clinics.
