Dr Oliver Segal

Cardiology, Electrophysiologist

All arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, catheter ablation, SVT, atrial flutter, ventricular ectopics, slow heart rhythms, pacemaker insertion, conduction system pacing, leadless pacing, defibrillators, CRT pacing for heart failure, left atrial appendage occlusion devices.

I have over 20 years’ experience in the management of arrhythmias, performing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, as well as implanting pacemakers, defibrillators and other cardiac devices. I specialise in electrophysiology – the study of heart rhythm disorders.

I focus on seeing patients with rapid palpitations and tachycardias, irregular heartbeats, ectopic or ‘skipped’ beats, pauses and slow heartbeats, dizzy spells and blackouts, including patients with breathlessness and tiredness due to atrial fibrillation (AF). I am an expert in performing electrophysiology studies, catheter ablation for all types of arrhythmia and implanting pacemakers, defibrillators (ICDs), loop recorders and biventricular pacing systems.

I have performed over 2,000 electrophysiology studies and ablations (including the use of 3-dimensional mapping systems) and over 2,000 device implantation procedures. I perform
conduction system pacing, leadless pacing, pacemaker lead extraction and also implants left atrial appendage occlusion devices (the Amulet device) for patients with AF and high risk of stroke who cannot take anticoagulants or when anticoagulants have failed.

I also see patients with other cardiac conditions, such as high blood pressure, chest pain, heart valve disease, cardiomyopathy, heart failure and loss of consciousness.

Dr Segal graduated from King’s College London and King’s College Hospital, London in 1995. He trained in general cardiology at St Bartholomew’s and The London Chest Hospitals. His specialist postgraduate training in cardiology, electrophysiology and device implantation was undertaken at St Mary’s Hospital, The Heart Hospital (UCLH) and then St George’s Hospital in London. In 2007 he completed a one year Fellowship in pacing & electrophysiology at Prof George Klein’s worldrenowned electrophysiology unit in London, Ontario, Canada.

During his training, Dr Segal undertook a period of research on mapping complex ventricular arrhythmias at The National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, London and was awarded his doctorate (MD) for this work in 2008. He presented part of that research at the 2004 Heart Rhythm Society in San Francisco, USA where he won first prize in the highly prestigious Young Investigator Award competition for clinical research.

Dr Segal was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist at The Heart Hospital (University College London Hospitals) in 2008, before moving to Barts Heart Centre, St Bartholomew’s Hospital in April 2015 when services were transferred. He is lead for arrhythmia & electrophysiology at University College Hospital where he runs weekly arrhythmia clinics and operates in the NHS at Barts Heart Centre.

He sees patients privately at The Harley Street Clinic, where he also operates weekly. He was made a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society and Royal College of Physicians in 2013
