My clinical practice involves a combination of General Cardiology consultation work and Interventional Cardiology procedures. In the clinic, I see patients who present with a variety of symptoms that may relate to the heart. I am able to offer them an opportunity to discuss their concerns and (where appropriate) the judicious use of investigations in a timely manner. If a heart-related condition is identified, I am able to plan and coordinate ongoing care and treatment if this is needed, whether it be inpatient or (more usually) outpatient based. My additional area of special expertise within Cardiology is the care of patients with coronary artery disease. I perform coronary angiography, to study the heart’s arteries and, where it is suitable, am able to treat disease in these arteries using angioplasty (ballooning) and stenting, to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. Expertise I have had extensive training and clinical experience in all aspects of general adult cardiology. Symptoms and conditions that I investigate and manage include:

I trained in undergraduate medicine at the University of Cambridge, where I gained a First Class Honours Degree in Physiology in 1994 and won a number of awards, prizes and scholarships. I progressed to clinical training, also at the University of Cambridge, and passed final MB examinations (to qualify as a doctor) with triple University Distinctions. My cardiology training has been undertaken at a number of leading London Hospitals including Harefield, the Royal Brompton, Guys and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospitals. My specialist training in invasive and interventional cardiology was gained both in London and during a year-long fellowship at a leading cardiology unit in British Columbia, Canada. Additionally, I have formal national accreditation in echocardiography.

I have a busy NHS practice as a Consultant Cardiologist at University College London Hospitals and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, where I am involved in both General and Interventional Cardiology. I have led a number of quality improvement projects, including restructuring of the General Cardiology outpatient clinic to improve patient experience. Alongside this, I have considerable research experience, including a PhD gained at King’s College London. I maintain a number of active research interests, including acting as a Principal Investigator in multi-centre clinical trials studying ways to improve outcomes in coronary artery disease.

I publish in leading cardiovascular journals and am a member of the Research Committee of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society. I act as a reviewer for medical journals, including The Lancet, and am on the editorial committee of the British Journal of Hospital Medicine. I act as a Lead Tutor at UCL Medical School for an undergraduate learning module centred upon cardiovascular disease and its impact on patients’ lives. I am also a lecturer on the national Interventional Cardiology training program for postgraduate doctors.
