Dr Amanda Varnava, Consultant Cardiologist at The Physicians' Clinic, and the team of cardiology experts who work with the Football Association, have recently published important new information on the incidence of unexpected sudden death in fit, young athletes. Their study, published in the hugely influential New England Journal of Medicine found that the incidence of unexpected sudden cardiac death amongst young footballers was much higher than had previously been reported. The study also suggested that a one off cardiac check in adolescence was not sufficient to rule these conditions out in adulthood, and that athletes involved in competitive sport should consider ongoing checks beyond the age of 16 years.
