There have been huge, and largely successful efforts, particularly with the use of artemesinin-based combination therapy and insecticide treated bednets, to reduce the burden of malaria, which still kills hundreds of thousands of people, especially children and especially in sub-Saharan Africa. But the recent emergence and spread of malaria that is resistant to these drugs is a major problem. Currently these highly resistant strains are still largely restricted to a small area in South East Asia, but this does still mean it is a life threatening condition for people who live there and there is reason to expect it to spread to other areas unless there is a major increase in funding and concerted global efforts to isolate the risk.
