I was delighted to achieve academic promotion with Imperial College in September 2016 and am privileged to hold the title Professor Ailsa Hart.
I continue my busy clinical practice seeing over 2000 patients with inflammatory bowel disease per year with referrals from all over the UK and abroad. Recent feedback from a patient was “Prof Hart is like IBD royalty - you just know you’re in the safest, most capable and best possible hands. There’s the National IBD Standards and then there’s the Ailsa Hart IBD care standards, which are even higher and unbeatable. I wish they could clone her.”
I combine my clinical work with an exceptionally strong academic portfolio, having published over 135 articles and book chapters and 2 books. I have supervised/ am supervising over 20 higher degree students (MD/PhD) and deliver on average 40 lectures annually, including being the invited visiting lecturer to national meetings in Australia, South Africa and India. I take great pride in being National Lead for Patient and Public Involvement in gastroenterology research. I am Chairman of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) Gut Microbiota for Health Group, member of the BSG IBD Clinical Research Group, Research Committee of the UK IBD Charity and member of the International Organisation of IBD. I am Associate Editor of the popular gastroenterology journal, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
My research aims to achieve better ways to diagnose, monitor and treat inflammatory bowel diseases. In particular, I continue to explore the role of the micro biome in gastrointestinal diseases and how it can be modified as a treatment strategy.
